The Duke of Wellington Pub Lincoln, this venue goes down in soul history in the city it was the first ''grown up'' venue that housed northern soul from way, way back in the day, as opposed to the youth clubs that we all frequented at one time or another. It hasn't really changed over the decades just a fresh lick of paint now and again. The same as the ELSC venue it houses other genres of music at other times of the year, which makes it a favourite venue of the citys youth, just like it used to be ours back then. Tonight saw the first of this years Ad-Lib nites an eagerly awaited return after their successful stint in Soho, and I am pleased to say they are well and truly back in their roots in the upstairs room of the welly.... We arrived just after 8 to see a few local faces already settled down for the evening and on the decks some mighty fine tunes already being spun by Doug and Kath in a double decking frenzy of some classic tunes. The floor was well peppered as was always the case with this venue, the clinical lighting was reduced and the scene was set for a nite which was a full on party, we weren't really sure what we were celebrating maybe it was the long awaited return of Ad- Lib back into the family fold as we had previously thought once they had tasted the bright lights of the smoke they would not be back, but back indeed they were with full on force too. Compliments to the Dj's my legs, hips and feet hurt today, which is always a good sign of a fantastic nite of tunes. Doug, Kath, Alan, Jean Paul, and Dave all playing across the genres of those closely associated to soul, some classic tried and tested oldies, club soul sounds, 6ts, ska, and of course the very, very mighty RnB which if I had to take a vote was my genre of top tunes of the nite. I love hearing stuff that I have not been priveledged to hear before and RnB has that essential factor that just makes you want to dance and dance I did. I couldnt even hazzard a guess to what was played by whom, or who it was by as northern is predominately my trade, but I have no doubt that the playlists will be posted in due course by those 'in the know'. It was refreshing to see the young uns from downstairs come up and enjoy the evening later on, all of which I spoke too enjoying new sounds to young ears, impressed with the dance floor, no dress code, and the safe atmosphere, which are comment enough, especailly from those so young whom already have an ecclectic taste in music so hopefully they will remember the sounds they hear and give the likes of slipknot a miss once in a while and come and see what the old folks are doing again. So the only thing really left to say is, many thanks Glenn for bringing your baby back to where she belongs, and heres to the next one. Dawn

Hi Dawn, really thoughtful of you to surprise the Ad-Lib crew with this video. The soundtrack is spot on in reflecting the kind of sounds we like on our nights and compliments the images as we would wish. It 's a great promo of our night. Thanks again Glenn. ps. That print of Kate is so retro. It could have been an image of an exhausted dancer in the mid-late 6ts "golden era"where most of our music comes from (with an occassional late 50's track)!I'm seriously planning to do something with it poster-wise if i can sort out who may be interested in such things.

I think so too Glenn, I love the image and I dont think our Katie has seen them yet, I will give her a ring later and let her know. She will be chuffed with it too being as shes a retro gal. Some really nice pictures taken, with the feel of the nite about them, if there can be such a thing, but you know what I mean. The track is Baby Earl and the Trinidads and called Backslop, its in Allans playlist from the night, and one of my own bits of vinyl, that I can upload now thanks to a usb turntable. Whens the date for the next Ad-Lib? let me know and I can do some early PR, by putting it on my websites and the RnB website.

Mick Moylan first played Back Slop at the Central Soul club last summer, sign of a good track when nobody knows it and it filled the floor after 15 seconds of playing, own up that Ad Lib resident DJ who said it was rubbish when I sent him an mp3
