The Square Peg, Skegness july 08 Not the most populated event at the Peg this year but that was to be expected, many other events around tugging at the purse string of this over inflated economy of hours. With T.V. cameras in the north midlands attracting the punters moth-like to a chance of fulfilling the Warhole “Fifteen Minutes” ethos alongside a big wedding reception not twenty miles away the numbers were never going to be a record. Despite this there were plenty of people there, more than enough to pay tribute to the guest dee-jays who provided the paying public with a whole bunch of soul almost to die for. Boston’s so very underrated (but not in these parts) ‘Rupe’ playing an eclectic mix of rare and underplayed soul including one of my favourites Doc Peabody (and if I was to tell you how much this slab of salubrious and very expensive soul cost the young Bostonian many aficionados would be positively crying in their cornflakes.) Next up was Roger Banks who’s delivery of some of the finest soulful underplayed 60s and early 70s quality music just had to be heard to be appreciated. Final guests, Skegness’ own Mick and Mo. Lincolnshire has an embarrassment of dee-jaying riches, people like Chris Forrest, Steve Jay, Dave Raistrick, Rupe, Marcus Reid and quite a few more but none, to me, match the tunesmiths Mick and Mo. Their tunes defy pigeon holes, they are rare (some very rare indeed) but they should not be confined to just ‘Rare Soul’ nights, theres’ (as with Rogers’ and Rupes’) should be aired regularly at ‘mainstream’ events just so ALL the practitioners of this wonderful scene of ours get the chance of realising the broadening ones horizon does not mean sacrificing quality. Top tunes (massive understatement there) and a top night. Hats off to the promoters (Pete, Brian and Rob) for putting this event on and giving all at the Peg a taste of rare soul at it’s most finest. The next event at the Peg is on August 16th with an all female line up which includes Sam Evans, Debbie ‘J’ and Bridgette. (who’s Bridgett you say? Mick Smith’s wife so you know the tunes are once again going to be Hot on that night.) Images on www.freewebs.com/skeggsoul/index.htm

THAT'S the difference XX

shit we must be doing something wrong !! the leg end that is doug hall says were crap. do me a favour!, from someone who only dj's at newark ( own event), horncastle ( need the decks) and skeg ( feel sorry for him).we'll have to learn how to play carvers of sam's tunes ( with sam in attendance) and crap played out motown ATHEMS!!!. please do me a favour. let's see off the top of my head. two biggest nighters in the country ( the wilton & middleton), soul revoloution ( one of londons biggest nighters)clee, bridd & skeg wkenders,4 or 5 of the northwests best soul do's, best soul do's in the notts & sheff area, resident's at lifeline events at the qube, i could go on, but think doug might be right, we must be crap. wish we could get a booking at a run down old church hall in the back streets of newark, shit we are doomed !!. agree with his view on chris & tats, great dj's and great collections, and proper soul people. dont pretend to be fantastic wedding reception 'dj's' like dougie, could learn to shout 'ATHEM' after every record, though i suppose, but for doug to come on here and slate us off, just not cricket.

to be fare mick, dougs right to have his op-ions. he thinks we play bad records and that's fare enough. just hope people wont be put off coming to hear us play out,cos he's rubbished us.we play records we believe in,and think need to be heard. my op ion(for what it's worth) is anyone who play's 'touch of velvet'ect, baby love inst','tribute to betty',drizzer funny bone',bla, bla, bla, ect is the joker, but there again 'it's a crazy world' another ATHEM there!. we will keep playing the likes of ;ernie johnson'i can't stand the pain', roosevelt mathews'digging you', percy stone'chained', idris Mohammad, believer', sideshow'lonley girl' wil hatcher, willie tee, tommy tate, johnny thompson, george smallwood,'touching is my thing'&'hey mamma', chuck ray,'i don't mind', earl's inc, dewey jefferies, ect, ect.( theres got to be one good record listed there or i'm a fat dinosaur) i hope that maybe, just maybe nearly 70years between mo & me,in,on and around the rare soul scene, collecting records, going to events, just might,i say might have left us the ear for a good record.

It's good to see some DJ's out there with a bit of imagination, and put some thought into what they play. I class myself as an out & out oldies man but I am sick and tired of listening to the same old crap What Mick & mo play may not be everybody's cup of tea but I for one would go & listen to them. Along with John Parker (york) & mark etheridge (Sheffield) Tony Clarke (Nottingham) Marcus reid (Boston) IMO some of the best DJ's around, because they try to play something different. Andy

Mike finnigan,Jyve five Malibus,Roosevelt Grier,Fantassions,Soul Merchants, Dee Clark, Bunny Sigler current Fave Len Barry which I played and put on the second SweetSoul Anniversary tape 11 years ago, apart from and I admit to Jo Jama,Tommy Ridgeley, and Bobby Kline, Parliaments which AT THE time i had cut aprox 15 months ago did not know who it was as picked up from a cd of stuff given to me, the other carvers are cd trax or unnissued stuff given to me over the years , wont go down this road again and to say Mick i rubbished you is untrue and as stated what you play leaves me cold,am not saying is not good music, but as everyone plays what they want/wrong i play hopefully to the people who want to dance and all types and crossover or modern items whoever wants them and whover requests what i have available whether top "500 !" Motown classics Stax/Atlantic ANTHEMS ,or some of the stuff i have bought over the years, as Coops has stated i Exist therefore I am. but i am not derogatory in what i say and have withdrawn the original statement re DJs, if he wishes to discuss what we say further then he has my no and my address.but I will see him next week anyway so we can sort out,our differences off opinion as we do then, over a drink and a snack.

George Smallwood..Touching is my thing , hmm I love this record. I did tell you so at upfront Mick. Listen, if I want to listen to something different which I do like to, I will seek out Mo & Mick as they do play some lovely stuff however If I want to dance I will listen to Dougie and have a good social time. I'm not into the politics of it all but come on guys this is plain daft. Theres another Soul site on which people post like this and frankly it bores me and puts me off going on there. I like to think we are above all that ego bull*@te. Am I wrong ? Hope my spellings ok ??
