I tell you what petec77, I'm unsure about the answer, but I know why the internet came up with Len Barry. Does it go: 'The Moving Finger Writes, having written once before.' If it does - my memory tells me it's Len Barry from '67 on RCA!!! Now 'Ain't That Peculiar'.

A little checking and the Len Barry was issued here since there is a mention of it in the Radio London "Fab 40". See www.radiolondon.co.uk/rl/scrap60/fabforty/may67/may6701/fab070567.html That was #27 on Sunday 7th May, 1967. I pretty sure I remember some lyrics .... 'The moving finger writes, and having written it moves on' since I think I had it by someone. Just asked my wife and she recalls it too. Len Barry was always a bit of a hero for me - ever since I heard 1,2,3 for the first time, so it could have been his version. Like petec777 says though - it's nagging me a little that it wasn't the Len Barry version at all. I've got a vague sense of a group - who could even be British. One thing for sure; no version made our "hit parade". On with the search. I'm sure about the lyrics though. Got it - The Four Kents...... That was on RCA in the UK too - I think it was that fact that allowed me to persuade myself that it was Len Barry !! Old age, eh ?

I should have joined all this together but I'm having trouble with the site. Seems like the single was issued in '68 with 'Searchin'' on the "B" side and that the 4 Kents were US Servicemen, based in N. Italy who signed for RCA in London. The went on to be Londonbeat, apparently. Jimmy Helms was in LB but maybe not 4K. He recorded 'Gonna make you an offer you can't refuse' in '73 and went to #8 in the UK top 20. This was an orange RCA label. Anthony Swete - 'Backfield in motion' at around this time and Carolyn Franklin's version of 'The Boxer'. That's all folks. Except Nick - I keep having to use the refresh button else I'm modifying/viewing a previous version.

I don't. It's a pleasant enough sing-a-long tune that's mid-tempo. I've been trying to remember if the "B" was any good. I know it was 'Searchin'' and I'm sure it's not the Coasters tune. Seem to remember it's upbeat, though. Sorry - maybe you'll just have to take a punt on it.

Yeah think I will..found a copy on Ebay..£19.99 + p&p...it's just that the Four Kents is not ringing any bells and I'm wondering if there is another version out there other than Len Barry..I was a DJ at a club in Nottingham in the 60's and remember playing the Moving Finger Writes from about 1968 onwards...thanks for your help.
