With three of lincolnshire’s finest northern and rare soul dee-jays behind the decks at the services & social club in spalding the one thing expected and delivered was quality soul music, from the sixties to this century track after track, after track played were nothing short of northern and rare soul music from the most inner part of one’s desires.
The key word of this event is quality and it was present in abundance.
Co-promoter steve ‘jay’ started the evening off, and the main problem with steve’s set would seem to be “how can one follow that”.
Many may have been phased by such a challenge but not the two double-decking guests for the evening andy ‘tats’ taylor and chris forrest.
When these two get together they both seem to play off each other, almost as if one would play a track and the other would play one at least as good if not better.
The only problem with this for ‘lesser mortals’ would be the finite amount of quality soul available to play in one night but, not with these two, who each has a record collection to match his wealth of experience, knowledge and set building skills behind the decks.
To me, one of the most satisfying experiences at a northern and rare soul venue is when a dee-jay plays a sound I have never heard before with which I totally connect.
‘tats’ played one, which I’m ashamed to say I never caught the artiste or title which almost floored me with it’s soulful content and tempo almost tailor (excuse the pun) made for today’s scene. The only clue I have to it’s identity is that it apparently came from cliff steel, a recommendation in deed.
Norfolk’s own kev laws joined steve ‘jay’ for the last hour and he played a previously unreleased mary gresham track called (I think) “I’ll never let you walk alone”, again, on first hearing it felt like I had known it for an eternity, I hadn’t but that again, to me is a sign of a quality record. The tangeers sitting comfortable in the same evening as the starburst band, a true mixture of that word ‘quality’ again.
The track of the night for me was bobby taylors “don’t be afraid” which, when played simply topped of what was, once again, an excellent night of quality soul music in spalding.
The next event by this crew is on the 27th of june with guests steve woomble, carl Fortnum and dave raistrick, bit of an east coast theme but one that will appeal to all appreciators of quality northern and rare soul.
