If you have been asked to upgrade to AVG 8 free anti virus software be warned there is a lot of talk of it having major problems in that it slows some computer right down by eating up CPU power. That is my experience of it too so I have uninstalled it and put on an alternative free one from www.avast.com/index.html which found stuff AVG had failed to find in many years of usage. So far it looks fine but just not as pretty, when setting up ignore the boot scan on first launch as it will take hours apparently. UPDATE: been on 24 hours now and my computer is running 10x the speed it was a few days ago, AVG almost caused me to buy a new machine as I had checked Ram and CPU for errors, it almost ground my computer to a halt..

Hi Nick, funnny you should mention the AVG problem on my main machine AVG 8 really slows it down but on my laptop it just seem's to work perfect

I don't have it on my laptop as I have Symantec End Point Protection on there but they say it seems to only affect some machines and 7.5 worked fine. This Avasts eems to do the job it certainly found some horrors lurking that AVG had missed.
For those who do not check you should use Ad Aware, Spybot and Avast on a regular basis (all free), I once installed on someones machine and found almost 700 worms, trojans and other spying things that were slowing them down and feeding info back to the people who send spam (or worse).
Try the above if you get lots of spam it will cut it right down.

Can you tell me which avast you use please! PS not PC minded!!!! Using Avast 4.8 home edition. (the free one) Still seems fine and running smoothly. It is running in the background and keeps saying it has updated itself, I do a manual scan occasionally of the drives to make sure the trojans and other horrors are not getting past. www.avast.com/index.html
