Of all the bars in all the world you have to come to this one!
Why?
A couple of reasons really, as a venue it is second to none on the east coast, it’s dance floor is surrounded on either side by a sort of duo-level seating, a stage at one end and a bar at the other giving it an almost amphitheatre feel.
The other reason is the collection of characters who put their hands up and admit to being responsible for the event. They not only love their northern souls (60s, 70s, 80s and beyond also RnB) but first and foremost they love a good time.
Their enthusiasm for a damned good night with damned good music is infectious and, although numbers were a bit thin (Bridd just up the road and a scooter rally 2 miles away in Cleggy) those that did attend, in general, had a damned good night.
Hosts Nick Borst, ‘schmucker’ and Pete Stone (who’s record box is like the Tardis, quite small but pack with an immense amount of quality vinyl which belies it’s physicality) know their crowd and played to them, luckily for them the visitors appreciated the mix of genre just as much.
The guests for this evening were Dave Raistrick who played probably one of the best and varied sets i’ve heard him play this year (and living in Skegg, believe me, I get to hear a few Dave Raistrick sets in a year). The other guest was Nottingham’s own Rob Smith, like Dave he has a history on the scene, some may say he can “Blow hot or cold” well this warm and muggy June evening Rob played hot, very, very hot, again one of the best sets I’ve heard him play for a while, to the floor, as it should be.
All in all a very good night with very good company in a very, very good venue. The next event hosted by these enthusiastic lovers of soul is on September 6th, and, of all the bars in all the world, you really have to try the Casablanca in Grimsby.
P.S. a raffle was held to support Horncastle’s Nick Rennie’s Cancer appeal and £105 was raised pushing the appeal to over £800 to date, now that’s sharing one’s soul.
