Finally got round to a write up of last week. During my many times at the main Grosvenor weekenders I have always enjoyed going down to the "Vault" to hear the rarer sounds, appreciating an easier pace than upstairs, and sometimes even having the questions of mystery tracks answered when I've recognised tunes from tapes and CDs I've been given without track listings. I had looked forward to this weekend very much.
Always a warm welcome from hosts Dave and Donna at the door as I arrived on Friday night, and saw Pete and Val Taylor in the room. Great music was already playing to welcome me into this event, hardly any of which I actually knew, but it was a great shame to see that there were not a lot more in the room sharing my appreciation. It really showed on the Friday when they finished playing in the bigger room and everyone moved into the smaller one. Not long after this I felt the yawns and left for the night.
What this weekend didn't have in quantity, it certainly had quality. A great range of underplayed soul music shared among good friends. The Saturday afternoon was particularly chilled, a chance to chat with tunes in the background, many too slow for normal venue play. Back in the evening with Steve Jay playing for the first hour at Upfront, then I went the short walk for my first visit to the Square Peg (I've already posted on the review thread), then came back to Upfront at 10 with Steve Woomble and Andy Riley now playing, and it was nice to see it had got busier with more there for just the Saturday night.
To sum up, I had still enjoyed this weekend very much. With hindsight it had not been a good time to run a weekender, in the middle of a busy period for the much bigger weekenders with Cleethorpes two weeks earlier, Bridlington and Whitby after, as has been discussed on the "Soul in decline?"
thread on the general board. Talking to Donna on Saturday night she was saying that Dave is still keen to continue the Upfront formula, but that it would probably work best as a Saturday all-dayer rather than a weekender, I'd agree with that too.
