St. James’, Orrell and Roman Korol’s birthday in Burnley….
Four travellers from the east anglia region ventured up to the north west of this sceptered ise in search of some soul self satisfaction and found it, in spades, but not only did it find music to move a groove but also a load of northerners with hearts as big as their souls.
First part of Saturday evening was spent at the st. james’ club in orrell (wigan) where the ‘for dancers only’ event said just what it does ‘on the tin’.
Northern soul music to dance to, to socialise to, even to eat an impromptu buffet to, target hit on all three aspects.
Dee-jays Liz Wadeson, Pete Everett and Marcus reid provided the musical background to a practically perfect evening in every way, an evening which even provided a few 70s classics to supplement the usual 60s soulful content of this most excellent venue.
The music and venue were all but matched by the friendliness of the attendees, so much so the east anglia pilgrims felt as at home as if they’d held the event in their own front rooms.
Missed the last hour and a half due to the continuation of this epic journey to burnley and the 60th birthday of Roman.
As said before of some other fellow recently, a measure of a man’s worth may be reflected by the qualities of his friendships.
Romans’ friend turned out in veritable hoards for the celebration of his sixtieth birthday. I must say I didn’t know many people there, neither did my three fellow ‘fenlanders’ (we MUST get out more) but the collective were more than friendly, they oozed hospitality and charm. The music was a sweetly cooked as a risen soufflé, a dance floor to die for and an atmosphere money just can’t buy.
Add this lot to dave furgeson playing (amongst many other of my favourite tunes) tony clarke’s ‘wrong man’ and you can see why this evening made my smile as wide as the ‘Wash’ itself.
A couple of hours to snooze in chesterfield on the way home, big breakfast and a lazy sunny Sunday morning cruising back to the east coast surrounded by friends, music and memories of a top night in the north west.
