Soul @ Stamford… the scene’s best kept secret…
This venue in the posher part of Lincolnshire has been going some time now but suffers from, what some may say is a terminal condition, a very low profile, in fact, it’s almost ‘not on the map’.
This is a major shame because for those who attend on a regular basis it is a perfectly formed event in more ways than one.
The dance floor is sprung and wooden, the air is conditioned, the beer is very, very cheap and the music is top draw.
Promoters Martin, Steve and Poke (yep, the Cleethorpes legend Poke) are very amiable, pleasant and a great laugh but sadly lacking in the promotion nouse required to high-profile this greatest little secret on the northern and rare scene.
Last night the mix of music was very, very good, not a lot of out-and-out modern but some great lesser played eighties, 70s classics and of course 60s soul music to die for.
It was great to hear the Vondells played out although I do wish that if someone is going to have a record ‘Carved’ they would do so from a decent sound file and please resist the temptation of scanning a label and sticking it on a Carver to make it look like a real record, dishonest and quite crass I feel.
Dee-jays: Steve Gutteridge, Skip Stuart and Smudge (Carl Fortnum unable to be there this time because of family holiday but he’ll be back in October) ably delivered the sounds to dance to, to socialise to and even to tap ones fingers and feet to.
So, the best kept secret is kept no more, a half full venue (better than being half empty) which could benefit with a higher profile in itself is a gem of an event loved and admired by the one hundred or so regulars that find their northern and rare soul every two months in this beautiful stone built town just of the A1 on the southern edge of Lincolnshire
