Square Peg, Skegness Aug 2008
This event was christened (with tongue firmly in cheek) a night of “Tits and Tunes” alluding to the dee-jay guest list being five female dee-jays
This wasn’t strictly true, four of them, (Debbie, Donna, Bridgette and Little Jo) had not actually been behind the decks before, dee-jay virgins if you like while the fifth (Sam Evans) is equally comfortable behind them, spinning top tune after top tune as she is in front spinning on the dance floor
Some may say having four ‘virgins’ would be a risk, but not at the Peg, the atmosphere is so unique at the Peg that the only thing that could spoil a night would be a power cut
Quality of sounds from these first time divas of the decks was beyond doubt exceptional and would put many self-confessed dee-jays from this scene to shame
Sample sounds include:
Debbie
G.Q. – Make My Dreams a Reality
Ernie Johnson – Big Man Cry
Robert Palker – I Cought You In A Lie
Bridgette:
Nomads – Have I Got A Right
Robert Taylor – Time Keeps On Ticking
Four Voices – Our Love Is Getting Stronger
Donna
Mercy Men – You Made It Thunder
Dusty Springfield – What’s It Gonna Be
Luther Ingram – If It’s All The Same To You Babe
Little Jo
Bettye Swann – Make Me Yours
Admirations – Don’t Make Me Lie
Pages – Heartaches and Pain
And for those to whom this matters, their sets were all original vinyl
Debbie and Bridgette opened up for the first hour, then followed by Donna
Little Jo was next and at 12:30 Sam Evans came on (playing a very, very sweet mixture from the 1960s to pre-issued 2008 sounds, all bound by the fact that they were well and truly soulful sounds
Sam eventually was prised off the decks at 2:50 a.m. such is her enthusiasm and love for this music although the last hour and a half she doubled decked with resident (and only male member of the team this night) Mick Cooper
Attendance was refreshingly high in both numbers and in love for the northern and rare soul played this night
All Tits and Tunes will be on again, after the positive comments how could the promoters not follow it up next year
Another excellent night at the Square Peg, and don’t forget, it’s Not a Square and it’s Not a Peg
Well done promoters Pete, Rob and Hobbo for such a good night.
