Empress Ballroom, Mexborough, improving on perfection.
‘They’ say that one can’t improve on perfection, but in deepest Yorkshire they have an exception that proves the rule.
The Empress Ballroom in Mexborough’s regular Bank Holiday Sunday events are always very well attended. More than that, because of their popularity the promoters have to sell tickets in advance and always sell out! How many venues this day and age can make that claim?
Why is it so popular, well it can’t be because it’s the only place to go on a Bank Holiday Sunday.
There was an all-dayer at the rolls Royce in Derby (not very far away) also an all-dayer at the Phoenix Suite in Chesterfield which on it’s inaugural event had a very, very respectable number in attendance and that’s even closer.
The reason may be (and this is just one man’s opinion) the “A” word…….. Atmosphere.
This event in Mexborough positively leaks atmosphere from every door and window as one walks up to the venue.
It’s a bit like walking by some of our fondest venues back in the 70s.
Not trying to compare the two time zones but the feeling of anticipation one used to get when walking round the corner in Station Road or bouncing along that wooden Pier, that anticipation is replicated in Mexborough, not just the anticipation but the goods delivered most certainly hit the mark.
They love to dance in this part of Yorkshire and the dee-jays (both residents and guests) provide more than adequate ammunition to hit that target.
They love to talk, sociable to the tenth degree and they love their Northern soul Music.
Add all that together with one of the most amiable group of promoters one is likely to meet and you have an atmosphere which spells both success and a great time.
So how could they improve this event?
One may have thought that perfection could not be improved but then someone one had the idea of making the extensive ‘entrance’ bar area into a chill-out room, clear the small dance floor there for those who wish to dance, bung in a very nice sounding music system and have a bunch of dee-jays play an evening of modern, cross-over, rare 60s and even a bit of RnB! Job done, perfection perfected.
The next event here isn’t a Bank Holiday Sunday, it’s a Halloween event and those fortunate enough to purchase their tickets for this event before they all go will get free tickets to the Christmas event!
There you go, that’s perfection improved twice in one night, I think they call that Two for the price of one!
