Shakespeare once wrote; “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”.
If this is the case then I’m sure the ‘Thinking’ of the 130 plus souls that attended the Horncastle 5th Anniversary last night thought it good, very, very good.
The venue is an idyllic Lincolnshire hotel nestled in it’s own grounds and bordering both fishing lakes and a golf course.
There is a well furnished lounge/chill-out area festooned with luxurious leather sofas, a dance floor big enough to accommodate the enthralled gathering, bar priced that belie their hotel placement and, more to the point, a music policy so open one could not fail to find a whole clutch of tunes to your liking throughout an evening.
The purveyors of salubrious soulful sounds at the celebratory anniversary were resident (and what a resident) Chris Forrest, Marcus Reid (invited in to cover the absence of resident #2 Rupe, and cover he did filling the dance floor with dancers and our ears with fond musical memories). Guest Mr. Oldies Ian ‘Gee’ from Chesterfield, again evoking dreams and images of our past northern souls with his very, very well stocked collection of sixties soulful dancers.
2nd guest was a last minute addition and a surprise to many of the attendees but a surprise that did not in the least fail to delight. Andy Rix’s long awaited return to the decks was a pleasure to those who have known and appreciated his individual style and high quality of tunes as much as to me who unfortunately missed the ‘Andy Rix’ period by taking a break from the scene at that time.
I’ve known Andy for many, many years and he always did have a great taste in music even as a sixteen years old, as I say, many, many years ago.
Topping the night off was the other resident Doug Hall making sure the last half hour was an active and floor-filled as any other period you could wish to chose through out this special evening.
The next Horncastle is on 8th November and if one has never sampled it’s truly open style of music, hospitality and friendliness then more info can be gotten at: northernsoulmusic.co.uk/index.html
Here’s to the next five years, may we all be healthy enough then to enjoy what we do now, and then some!
