Soul ole, Peterborough
Not sure if the promoters thought the numbers were up or down but for me, they were certainly not down.
A veritable horde of soul seekers made it through the inclement icy fog surrounding the city with a northern soul tradition that goes so very far back to the original soul ole in Stanground in 1973.
Dee-jays for the evening included adopted Londoner Martin Stanford who now resides deep in the peaty soiled fens that surround the ‘Boro.
Thanks for playing a couple of Garland Greens back-to-back Martin, and Paul Thompson, just love it.
A few people I spoke to on the evening thought that Martin was not used to his potential being first on, I agree, this man’s and excellent dee-jay with some very nice tunes and an enthusiasm which could light the darkest of rooms.
Marco Martineli was also guesting, it’s always a pleasure to hear Marco’s sets, he introduces old vinyl friends, mixed with new ones and a compliment of those that we may have forgotten.
As with Martin Stanford Marco’s enthusiasm and smiling personality also adds to his already excellent dee-jaying ‘tool bag’.
I remember Marco way back in the early to mid seventies, central hall, Kettering, north park club, he was just the same then as he is now.
Tony Wiggans from Sheffield also did a set. Now the last time I saw Tony guesting here he seemed to have his ankle in plaster, or at least heavily bandaged, this time his sacrifice to appear at the soul ole was he recently had his car stolen, but this didn’t stop him turning up. Tony loves dee-jaying at the soul ole and the soul ole soul fans love him.
He started off with two or three lovely mid-tempo tunes (including the Chimes, awesome) but noticed that the locals wanted to just dance the winter blues away so changed his direction and positively filled the floor ‘til the very last tune.
Resident Dave Forrest topped the evening off with his own inimitable mix of quality tunes from the present day to the 1960s’ totally across the board.
Top night, top venue, excellent beer prices and atmosphere to match.
It’s great to see the ‘soul ole’ of 2009 (I think in it’s 7th year, someone will correct me if I’m wrong) carrying on the tradition of top northern soul in Peterborough started by the Poke, Donnelly et al way back in 1973.
