Duke Orsino said (and of course Shakespeare wrote): “If music be the food of love, play on”, and both music and love were in abundance at the Annesley Miners’ Welfare 11th anniversary on the most appropriate Saturday the 14th of February. There was Love for a good time, shared by all, love for friendship, love for dancing and, the binding agent tipped on the end of Cupid’s bow, a love for Northern / Rare Soul. Annesley, a flag-ship venue of this area of the East Midlands already containing more than it’s fair share of venues, has no pretence, no Heirs and Graces, no illusion of elitism it just has good old fashioned atmosphere created by the people, the music and a dance floor to die for. Mine Hosts Pete Taylor and Steve Brown must have gone to bed happy chappies after this event because there were no down/grumpy/complaining faces to be seen, quite the opposite they all were up, happy and full of praise for the venue and event itself. When one promotes a Northern and Rare soul night here’s a tip for success, make sure your guest dee-jays can not only provide the tunes but also add to the ambience and the positiveness of the proceedings, in short, hire Andy ‘Tats’ Taylor and Chris Forrest, probably the finest double-deejay act since the legendary Ginger and Eddie. The twos’ enthusiasm show no bounds (as does their collective hoard of quality Northern and Rare soul music). A very, very good night, no, a great night and long may Pete and Steve continue with the superb Annesley formulae. Images on ournorthernsouls.org

Rarely do I respond to reviews in which I have had some involvement. To me it seems that too often the comments submitted by those directly involved appear little more than a procession of superlatives which can, on occasion, bear little resemblance to the actual night in question. I make an exception here because I have no direct interest in this venue beyond a respect for what Pete and Steve have proudly achieved in this corner of the East Midlands for the past eleven years. This was only my second visit to Annesley, the first being on the almost identical weekend in 2008. I loved the venue (welcoming the cheap bar) and the passion for soul music so evident amongst those that support the event regularly. As coops accurately suggests in his admirable post there are no pretensions at Annesley and the knowledgeable audience respond with enthusiasm to virtually every track played for them. The paying customers do not flock to Annesley to be educated or to hear rare and expensive soul obscurities, they can do that elsewhere. They turn up in healthy numbers to dance, to have fun, and to spend time in a friendly environment listening to the sounds they love. Long may that continue and if it works, then why change it at a time when so many venues appear to be suffering a decline in numbers. Both myself and Tats, along with all of our party had a great time on Saturday and have nothing but admiration for the efforts of the promoters at Annesley. We would like to thank them and the audience for the warm reception we were given simply for sharing with them all the music we love. This is probably where I would part company with Duke Orsino. It is very unlikely that at this stage of my life “my appetite (for soul music) may sicken, and so die.” Chris

Sorry to spoil that coops - i didn't know whether it was Orsino's servant Valentine that had prompted the analogy. P.S. Judging by some of those photos of biz at Christmas he's perfect for a leading part in the play. Isn't there some cross dressing involved somewhere?
