Square Peg at the Bar Life,
I think it was Marsha Brody who sang “We got the right combination”. I’m sure she must have had a vision at the time, a vision of the soul nights in Skegness of which this was one of many that combined northern, rare and modern soul of a quality as played on the very harps of the Angels themselves with an ambience which must be the closest thing to heaven in a venue that, although a substitute for the ‘Peg’ has an identity and feel second to none.
Northamptonshire’s’ Marco Martinelli and John McDade guested and read the crowd like a well thumbed book, delighting them with chapter after chapter of tunes to make the spine tingle and feet rush to the dance floor.
Residents Brian ‘Hobbo’ Hobson and Chris ‘Biz’ Howard also stepped up to the plate and delivered. Both these two are relatively new to dee-jaying but both acquitted themselves with honour.
It may be a year before the re-build of the Square Peg is complete but thanks to the generosity of the management of the Bar Life in letting us ‘squat’ there until that long awaited day Skegness has yet another top venue filled with top ‘punters’ dancing to top tunes which is a becoming a pleasurable habit in this seaside town on Lincolnshire’s East Coast, a habit that, thankfully, seems very hard to break. The next event at the Bar Life is on March 21st when Yocky, Alex Simms and Derek Greenhoff venture down ‘South’ and join in this special soul night, if one can get to it one will not be disappointed, not one little bit.
