Breaking the usual habit on a friday night, travelled over to the Royal Hotel Scunthorpe after seeing the flyer on this site.At the door it seemed very busy, handed over the £15 for three folks, then walked into the venue.Firstly the bar room was packed, sneeked a look into the main room , it was heaving no seats anywhere, and maybe 30 folk stood around!!!!.
Having spent 10 mins in the place I realised i knew nobody in the place - very rare these days this side of the pennines.Watching the dancing there were some old soulers,a few wannabe soulers ,quite a few handbaggers and some heavy drinkers. Hmmn was the thought.
Musically in the first 20 mins after arrival we were treated to a broad spectrum on northern soul. (Can't remember the last time i heard the joker & the exciters reachin' for the best played out). Then heard the DJ announce Rick Scott will be on in 5 mins - Horrors here for me - super guy but i just don't like his music.Anyway he behaved played a half decent set, but not too many dancing on a reasonable sized floor. The next DJ must have been an early to mid 70's club jock, superb on the mike but he certainly doesn't know much about northern soul. The highlight of his set was when he played the contours do you love me,to which about 40/50 folk were doing the dirty dancing bit to.This jock was playing a fair bit of 70's chart soul which was going down well with the general crowd (one group of females were actually dancing round 8 handbags and 5 pairs of shoes) - Hope you are now getting the picture.JC was the next jock on - very very mixed set of well known modern soul and some seldom played rarieties.Next on was our 70's club jock again, who promptly spent 10 mins doing the raffle, then proceeded to play one very varied motown and pop soul set, went down well the crowd tho.Heard 30 mins of this set and decided i'd had enough, after being pushed around half a dozen times by a very inebriated woman whilst trying to dance to one of the few northern motown tracks played.
Whilst outside having a smoke i was talking to one of the organisers , apparently retford will be huge due to the fact that there isn't a soul do there, Horncastle will be no more due to the fact that the town hall is closed and boarded up (have i been going to the wrong venue)
Overall on the night i heard a very varied lump of soul music played, very little true northern, but fine if you didn't mind debarge, lionel ritchie etc, a very sticky dancefloor due to the amount of folks dancing with drinks, and a 20 per cent northern crowd, out of about maybe 200 folk, Oh and by the way i did meet 3 soulers i knew , all from Scunthorpe.
Serious soulers please take note and think before travelling to these do's.
Sorry about this write up, but it's how we found it
