I don't normally listen to "MODERN MUSIC", as I stopped listening to the radio around 1968-69, and stopped buying records in 1972. But, thanks to a friend of mine, Ralph Terrana, I've been turned on to a new artist, Abraham "Smooth" Wilson and his new double CD ("Smooth Parts 1 & 2), that sound pretty good to me.
He's got a great voice and is singing songs made in the style of late '60s and early '70s Motown. That's no surprise, as ex-Motown sound engineers, Russ and Ralph Terrana, produced it and Russ did the sound engineering. The recordings are very clean and fresh-sounding (unlike a lot of the modern music I hear). Several of the cuts sound like they might do well with The Northern Soul crowd. Several also have a great group sound, sounding much like the mid/late '60s Temptations. Teddy Morrow (one of the background singers (and also one of the producers and songwriters), sounds a lot like Eddie Kendricks. There are some female background singers as well, and Nancy Jones and Eva Rasul sing duets with "Smooth".
I know that there must be several DJs on this forum, that are always looking for good music to play. I assume that some of you play current music.
Here's a link to the snippets of all 20 songs on Smooth's double CD: www.cdbaby.com/abrahamwilson/
Give the songs a listen. DJs who want a promotional copy, contact Ralph Terrana at: ralpht@soulfuldetroit.com
I also think that at least a few of the cuts would make it in the Northern Soul clubs.
I'm curious to hear what you all think of what you hear on the snippets (and the CD from those who get it), and how these recordings stand up against what else is being released these days.
