Was there a big country club near Derby that we used to go to on the coach or am I thinking of somewhere else. What was the name of the venue in Derby that used to do the all dayers in the early 8ts late 7ts?

it was the assembly rooms Jj speaking to my mate that is now in arizona, he and I were best buds and havent seen/spoken for 23 odd years, and we used to travel all over together, and have been reminicing about "the old times" and neither of us could remember the name of the place in Derby. They used to do some cracking all dayers there. But we seem to think that somewhere (in the country) we used to go to a big country club somewhere but neither of us can remember where... its an age thing ya know another thing we cant agree on is the venue we used to go to in Sheffield, I reckon it was Samanthas he says it was something totally different.

It was the Assembly rooms, I pass it now when going to our Derby branch, right in the middle of the city, used to go myself and it was a good venue.
I went to a club in Sheffield called The Fiesta and took a bus load for my 21st birthday, we saw The Three Degrees and had chicken in a basket (those were the days), was cabaret mostly and it was when Noah was a boy after all. I wonder what they call it now !

Yes they were good dayers, they did some do's at the Top Rank, in sheffield I seem to recall, can't remember dates but went there and to Samanthas too, another one to to remember was Leeds central, anyone go ? it was fab. Like you though sis, age and all, I sometimes get mixed up with the venue -town etc. see y'all over the weekend. x

I think the Fiesta became the Top Rank so that sounds about right.

fiesta and to rank were 2 seperate venues but just about side by side. fiesta was the old chicken in a basket place but did sometimes have some decent acts on, i saw four tops there twice probably late 60's early 70's. top rank was the place to be on tuesday nights, under 18's night and were all the mods and skins used to go mid 60's. i can remember being ambushed every tuesday night as we came out down the steps when all the "rockers" as they were then, waited to give us a good bashing. oh happy days!!

blue orchid as i remember it was like a big country house with gardens to walk round through some big glass doors i think, probably call them "chill out gardens" if we went now. the admission fee as i remember included a breakfast when the dancing finished at 8:00am, not as though many people had it!!!

the blue orchid was on gypsy lane at draycott just to the east of derby, it became the tudor court hotel but was knocked down a year or so ago to make way for (surprise surprise) a load of new houses; as aly-us would say - "time passes on"
