Well I dont know how to be unbiased on this entry but I will give a fair honest opinion from a soulies point of view. I shall incorporate those places that i have been too in the last couple of months. To kick off with we go to staythorpe hall home of sweetsoul in Newark, this one is a top class night of truly across the boards sounds ranging from Andy Jacksons (dark side ) Modern, to Gez langleys retro sounds to Doug halls motown and floorfillers add to that a top class dj each month and you have the perfect receipe for a cracking night. The three resident dj's compliment each other on the decks by keeping the sounds flowing smoothly throughout the night and each month you get to hear one or two tunes that have not been heard (by me) before. The crowd out there are a friendly bunch and the floor well used right from early doors. The venue itself is a la retro with a cheap bar which keeps the old hips knees and legs well oiled for the dancefloor. Marks out of 10 has to be top notch and if ya havent been its well worth a visit, but get there early as it is well attended and i hear that there is a top class female djay appering there in the summer, sweet soul newark every 2nd friday of the month.. My 2nd revue is Kingsway hall in forest town mansfield. Last month was our first visit there for about two years, as unfortunately our nites clashed as they fell on the last saturday of the month, so due to work committments E.L.S.C nights were changed to the 3rd Friday allowing us at last to get up to see Carl and the crew again. We arrived a little later than we normally do due to Trev's driving plus getting a tad lost but we got there at approx 8.30pm and the venue was about 3/4 full. Chuffed to bits as i walked in to be greeted by old friends, and there in time to catch me fave dj ian gee about to hit the decks, from this moment on I remembered the reason why i had been into Northern in the first place, all I can say is wow.... it blew my mind, what a night, this event is the dogs bolloxs in soul. I heard sounds that made the hair stand up at the back of me neck, and for once rather than propping up the bar or sitting down chatting, I was on me pins all nite giving it large on the dance floor as were others. If you have never been to kingsway, get yourselves there asap, cos you are missing out big time. The music is the ultimate in northern, the venue, as in sweetsoul, is 100% retro and the crowd one of the best bunch you'll ever meet.... when ya see peeps like Rob Smith and Dave Raistick in the foyer selling their wares ya know that this place is something special, and it certainly is... More reports to follow as this completly unbiased retro soul girl goes on tour.... TTFN

while the events reviewed sound good- How can anyone take a reviewer seriously who doesn't say who they are and what their affiliations are? Come on!! We can all self promote and promote our mates. Lets have some TRULY unbiased reviews. I can only say personally that stuff like that written just serves to put me off.. Too much of this 'Votes for the boys' stuff knocking about........................

There is an events section and a calendar for promotion of venues, there posts by members are allowed if they do not clash with more established nights in a 50 mile radius.
I also have an events revue page on the main site if anyone is interested in posting reports, problem is everyone has their musical leanings and there will always be differences of opinion.

Hello Dawny, I'm not gonna submit a review of the Ad-lib... don't think it would be right for a resident to do that. I will, however, stick my playlist on the end of this post. In the near future I will do a review of the Sleaford dayer, a brilliant event where we raised over £500 for Pete & Jules Smith's charity, despite the thieving sheep-shagger of a landlord taking £100 off us for security etc. (wish there was the facility to add one's own smilies at times like this ;D). Attendance throughout the day - probaly 200+? Ad-Lib playlist 18/02/06. First set. The Drifters - If You Don't Come Back Geater Davis - My Love Is So Strong For You (request) The Bar-Kays - Knucklehead Sugar Pie DeSanto - Soulful Dress Solomon Burke - Stupidity Bettye Swann - Lonely Love Etta James & Sugar Pie DeSanto - Do I Make Myself Clear The Shirleys - Bundle Of Joy Shirley - Big Boss Man Sonny Thompson - Hangout pt II Johnny Otis - Country Girl Jimmy McCracklin - Can't Raise Me (request) Jill Harris - Baby Won't You Try Me Second set: The Flirtations - Need Your Loving Ann Cole - Each Day Sam & Dave - You Aint No Big Thing Irma Thomas - Don't Mess With My Man Sam & Dave - Soothe Me (request) Ronnie Love - Chills And Fever (request) Little Willie John - I'm Shakin Little Johnny Taylor - Somewhere Down The Line (request) Earll Gains - Its Worth Anything The Playboy Band - High Heel Sneakers Trini Lopez - Sinner Not A Saint John Fred - Shirley The Scott Brothers - They All Came Back James Duncan - Three Little Pigs (request)

And an excellant couple of sets it was too Chevvy, danced me socks off to both of them. A hundred quid for security!!! The robbing git! seeing it was for charity too, I would have thought they would have let the price go on that, and after all we are talking about sleepy Sleaford its not as though its a seaside town on a bank holiday or in the middle of a major city. Ya should have said that ya needed some door peeps, would have got a couple of licensed mates to do it fer yers for gratis.... Been reading the feedback re the day and it sounds like it was a good un, so well done all the crew that took part and gave up the time and travelled down it was for a worthy cause and I am just gutted that I missed it. Enjoyed Ad-lib and it was great from a djay perspective to hear and play something a bit different instead of the same old stuff.

Thanks for your kind words Dawn, about both events. Apparently it was £60 for the "doorman" and £40 we'd donated for the room, but you are right... the beer was flowing from Mid-day till 1.00am, as you'd expect with the Yorkshire boys, and all the rooms were full with those that had travelled a long way/ imbibed a great deal. You live and learn! I don't think I've ever heard such a variety of quality soul music in one room before, nor seen such a happy mixture of Scots, Welsh, Dee-dahs, Cokneys and locals ;D The generosity of promoters and individuals in donating tickets, vinyl, scotch, leather under-garments etc was overwhelming and the money raised will go an awful long way for Pete and Jules's charity! I hope Trev's birthday bash was a good un and I dare say his was one of the many sore heads in Lincolnshire on Sunday morning
