Samantha’s Sheffield – The end of an era.
:)A strange thing to say but it’s a big pity there aren’t more of the great venues left to shut down so we could have these brilliant ‘end of an era’ nights every month.
The last really good night I went to was the Winter Gardens and then came the final nighter at Sammy’s last night.
A strange feeling of nostalgia and yet euphoria at the same time that after all these years since my first nighter there around 75 that she could still put on a good show for the faithful.
Not a night for the modernists I’m afraid this was a definite ‘oldie’s feast’ with some top spinners who know their stuff such as the (perfect gent) Mr John Vincent, Ginger Taylor and Kenny Burrell belting out the tried and trusted.
I have nothing against modern sounds I love them all but this is the first night in many a long year where I have known every record played and it’s forever since a have heard some of them played at a venue i.e. Dana Valery, World Column, Drifters etc and by the reaction of the crowd everyone loved it
No idea how many was there I guess around 400 (hard to tell with so many flitting in and out for a fag) and it wasn’t the fullest I’ve ever seen it but hey what a fantastic night with a great atmosphere just the same and I still didn’t get chance to sit down on a seat until around 4am .
One of the things that did stand out for me was in it’s heydays how the hell did we get everyone on to that tiny dance floor with the more acrobatic styles at the time because the floor last night was packed all the time and space was an absolute premium.
Anyhow well done John Vincent for organising the night and to everyone who turned up to give the venue a good sent off.
>:(So this is another part of my history going to build no doubt some 'apartments' because we really need more of them in Sheffield, £180 grand rabbit hutches.
It will be sorely missed.
