The event formerly held at Barrowby village hall until November, had its relaunch night at Grantham Squash club under the name of "Phoenix Soul" Saturday just gone and it went really well. Usual warm welcome from hosts Barry Cooper and Ian Seaman, usual great range of across the board soul music, usual friendly meetup with soulies from surrounding areas. The room here was partitioned, there are a few chairs and tables around the dance floor, but there was an arch between this area and the bar with lounge seated chill out area. Good to catch up with guest Mick H and Mandy, Mick played a great set catering well for everyone, as had the whole night. Barry is using the same venue on 5th April for a co-promotion with Sam Evans and Andy Baskett geared towards a more crossover and underplayed set titled "A1 Soul", while the next Phoenix night will be on 26th April and continue on last Saturdays of the month except when Skegness Weekender is on.

Have to agree with Alan on the whole, this was an extremely enjoyable night out. I thought the venue was really nice, much more luxurious than most (though not all). Mick H's set alone was for me worth the £4 tax. He played some belters and I'd love to have a look at his playlist though watching him he seemed to playing it by instinct, he dropped tune after tune, kept this old git moving for almost his entire set. After his cracking set the edge was knocked off a little as the first track played following Mick H was Queen of Fools which I personally became sick of hearing years ago and somehow it seemed out of place. Mind you there were some complaining that "modern" was being played when they had come for oldies, so they probably enjoyed it. Instead of complaining Just read the flyers or ask around as to what the policy is on a night, if they are going to play something you dont like, dont go, or in the case of this venue go into the bar and chat with your mates then go back to the dance floor when they are playing your particular kind of soul music. Promotors deserve our support not complaining at the drop of a hat. Nice night guys I enjoyed it. Could someone give me an indicator of the kind of set that Steve Austin usually plays as he is next months guest and he's not a DJ that I am familiar with. No $6000000 man quips please. If it looks to be a mainly oldies affair I'll probably give it a miss and keep my carbon footprint to a minimum.

Steve Austin all rounder and nearly as round as me. but plays anything people ask him for from all genres of the current soul scene we attend good lad and normally plays out of Mansfield area

Cheers for the Info Doug, I'll probably give it another visit in that case, unless it clashes with anything more local its always good to hear a DJ thats new to me.

Back again last night - big thanks and well done again to Barry, Ian and Steve Austin, another top night of quality soul right across the board, where I enjoyed a dance to many sounds from all eras. Thanks Barry for playing Banks and Hampton especially, this was played towards the end of the night and I half thought much as I like it, it would have cleared the floor, but it did not. Also nice to hear out was the Sons of Robin Stone "Got to Get You Back", a record I have at home which is not played out a lot.
