Can any one help, For the last month I have been inundated with pop up advertisements (mainly from casino/betting sites) and they are driving me mad. I have all the spam, pop-up blockers etc (all Norton) and they are all up and running but this makes little difference. Constructive advice please I have just renewed my subscription therefore I'm unlikely to change to Macafee or what ever Cheers steve

Hi Steve The best site for free downloads is www.download.com - on here you can try out pop-up stoppers of all different kinds - I use Spybot S & D and Adaware which can be downloaded free too. If you know anything about the startup menu on your system then I suggest you have a look there - Go to Run on the Start menu - type msconfig in the box and click OK - the Startup utility will appear and you go to the Startup which is the last tab on the right - if you see anything that you don't recognise here then take the tick out of the box and apply the setting - restart the computer and you should see the difference. You should be careful not to untick your firewall or anti-virus while you are doing this though.

Thanks everyone for your input, I have tried several versions of spyware now as per your instructions. I have at the moment Norton, Defender and Spybot on my system (takes me about 4 hours to start up!!!!!! but it doesnt seem to have made any difference, I'm therefore assuming there is a worm in the system that keeps activating a file and I have decided major surgery is required. Colin222 thanks for your tip re the start up I have looked but nothing stands out and I'm not confident enough to be sure which programs should be there or not, nothing stands out like Media, Advertisment etc. The annoying thing is I just can't understand why companies i.e. carphone warehouse do this sort of thing because all it means to me is till the day I die I will never ever buy from them Does anyone know if it is possible to turn the tables on these adverts by sending them pop ups or lots of 'Get F..ked messages. Just gets you down. Steve

I found Norton was really slowing my lads laptop down on start up so took it off. Maybe if they are not working, just use Zone alarm and AVG. + Spy bot when you feel like running it. AVG is a bit of a pain as if you use the free one it runs a scan every day and slows you down, I now use the full version and it is scheduled to run weekly but still monitors all incoming and email. Any help with making things work just ask, summat in my eye sorry.

Hi Steve
If you Google anything that you see in the Start menu it will tell what you have there.
If you do this you will get a greater insight into what is in your Start Menu.
As for Norton - it has never worked properly with Win XP from the start - it always slows the system down.
A good anti-virus is available from Panda if you don't want to use AVG - it can be a pain at startup!
I would run Adaware as well as Spybot too - what one can't find the other usually will.

Hi Steve Not been on for a few weeks - glad to see you are on the way to solving your popup problem - it can be a long process - my daughters bring a lot of problems on to my system with the rubbish they visit - I used to be a computer tech support advisor so if I can help anyone along the way then point them in my direction.
