Noticed over the past few months our local Wetherspoons (Wigan & Ashton) have been selling guest beers called 'northern soul legends', 'northern dancer' & a 'northern scooter' something or other. Is this just up here or are they selling it all over? Just wondered. ;D

Carlsberg don't do music, but if they did, it would probably be Northern Soul

Is this just up here or are they selling it all over? Just wondered. ;D Being partial to a pint or two of so-called "Real Ale", I've come across some of these beers. They're brewed in Northwich by The Northern Brewing Company and seem to base their brands on our favourite music genre. Anyway, the ones I've tried were very drinkable! www.norbrew.co.uk/beers.html

Thanks for that, soulsaddler.I knew they were brewed in Cheshire but that was all. Had a couple of pints of 'soultime' on sunday afternoon & I agree...very drinkable Be interested to know what you think about 'northern soul' bitter. Is it a good way of 'paying homage' to our scene or is it yet another example of the creeping commercialism that's starting to afflict us?

Not sure what to make of it, manc99. Initially I was quite pleased and surprised to see the label on the beer-pull. Real Ale beer labels give me almost as much of a buzz as record labels! I tried a pint of Northern Soul Rider, then a pint of Northern Dancer, and thought they were both quite good. Then it occurred to me how many people would have the faintest idea what the theme of the beers was all about? I can only assume that the people who run this brewery are Northern Soul fanatics. Should we be pleased that somebody is trying to create awareness of the greatest music form known to man (albeit in the pusuit of selling beer), or should it remain "ours", and not be subject to the type of commercialism that blighted The Scene in the seventies? Mmmmm...

Is it a coincidence that the biggest Wetherspoons selling northern soul bitter round here is almost next door to the new Grand Arcade with its Casino cafe. As I've said before I just hope we don't get a Casino Towers theme park with rides called 'the snake', 'wading in the water', 'shoot the duck', & 'on my way' At the moment I'm just about givin RW the benefit of the doubt. We'll see!!

Is it really or is it out of the John Smith's barrel ? sorry I have been made a cynic due to working in the marketing department for so long.

This week it's 'northern soul rider', complete with soulboy on scooter. Just had the one....not bad at all! Also got a 'northern all-nighter'. Best bit is it's only 1.59p a pint! ;D One of the guest beers is 'blond witch' but I had Ann(GD) with me so I didn't dare order one.

:)Tony, not noticed them round here yet but I will endeavor to visit Wetherspoons and have a gand, not too worried about commercialism any more and it certainly beats the usual names on 'Real Ale' 'Old scagpuss', 'nearlypenicillin' etc ;D

This month's offerings are a Wigan casino 'heart of soul' bitter & a northern soul 'two-tone' chocolate stout! The bitter was great but I couldn't bring myself to try the stout!
