Masonic hall, Retford 4th July,
Certainly the least amount of people I have seen at this venue, the reasons? The usual suspects too many venues, petrol too expensive, same night as Whitby, pick any one I’m sure it won’t be far from the truth.
What was served up to those few who attended, Northern Souyl, friendly and welcome, tracks from the dee-jays I managed to hear were all known ones but they were not like the Drunken Uncle one gets fed up with because he gate crashes every wedding, no, these were familiar friends of the past, a pleasure to dance to, quality and ones that I for one will never tire of.
The dee-jays for the night were ‘Caveman Pete’ (also promoter), Jez Langley, Steve Greenley and Gus (Mr. Wigan) with guest Boston’s Marcus Reid.
Late getting there and early leaving I’m afraid (family commitments and a tiring first week in a new job).
The two we caught the most of were Jez Langley and Marcus, both filled the few hearts that were there with beats and sounds that forced many of the attendants onto the floor. In fact, this was one of those great occasions where there were more dancer than not, and this I like.
Classics and forgotten gems from the 60s, 70s and 80s turned a room half empty of people into a room full of soul and dancing feet.
Thoroughly enjoyed my evening in Retford and for those that just couldn’t be arsed (and there may be some) you missed an evening of re-acquaintance with our northern souls of the past.
