Ad-Lib 6t's Soul/R&B Club, Lincoln. 27th March 2010.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening in a venue which is perfect for R&B music. The thick walled cosy basement of an old Edwardian municipal building in the heart of Lincoln, brought to life with the vibrant pounding music of the golden age of R&B. Roar and rooty vinyl tracks worshipped by the purists. The main basement room with dance floor has a few off-shoot rooms ideal for buying or selling records.
One might expect a basement club to be damp and dirty but this was far from it. I've been in a few basements clubs in my time but this one was by far posh'ist.
The ambiance of the room with the low ceilings, red décor, velour seating around the walls and along on side of the dance floor took me back to the old days when basement venues had sweat running down the walls and talc wasn't the only white powder being passed around. Safe to say, this venue is squeaky clean in all respects and the absence of cigarette smoke was another blessing.
Couldn't fault the music, and the packed dance floor was evidence of appreciation of the crowds that came south from Doncaster and west from Hull.
A fair selection of DJ's rotated every half hour and belted out the rarerest of the rare by: The Dells, Lou Johnson, Betty Harris, Ivory Joe Hunter, Bobby Day, Luther Ingram, Bobby Machin and Sugar Pie DeSanto to name but a few.
My only criticism was that the clocks went forward making the journey back to Doncaster an hour longer.
I'm look forward to the next time in anticipation of hearing R&B tunes worthy of complimenting any major Northern Soul event.
