Can anybody let me have info on Bruce Clouds version of Walk in my Shoes please? Availability, and most importantly price. I cant seem to find any info at all on this tune other than that it is on the current Village Soul 2 cd, but I already knew that. Grateful for any leads. Thanks in advance Midge

Dawn Thanks chuck. I have emailed one of the sellers to get a tracklisting of the LP. Its his version of the more familiar Gladys Knight tune I particularly want. If I cant get it on 7" I will have to look at the album option, if indeed its one of the tracks on there? Tragic story as well, another one to add to the suicides, murder, drug od's that litter the history of soul music. I'll let you know if I get any joy. Midge (or is that my name? )

Hi, Regarding Bruce Cloud's "California Soul" album, I am sitting here with Helen Lewis Mastor, the songwriter who co-wrote "Just Walk in My Shoes, a cut on the album and am holding the original album in my hands as I type. First off, "Walk in My Shoes" is actually "Just Walk in My Shoes, " written by The Lewis Sisters (Helen & Kay Lewis) The re-issue on the new compilation, "Village Soul 2" is mislabeled, and should read, "Just Walk in My Shoes." Helen and Kay have six covers on this song, The first released by Gladys Knight, which is considered a classic. Also, covered by The Sweet Inspirations, Gary Glenn & the Soul Set, Bruce Cloud, Billie Davis (country singer-also title of album compilation), and The Lewis Sisters themselves. Hope that gives you some more info.

We certainly have some celebrities / friends of celebrities around here this week, thanks for the info USsoul You say you are holding the original album, who's ? Whilst I have always liked Gladys Knights version it has never touched me personally. Bruce Clouds take on it just seemed to say something to me on a more personal level, if that makes sense? Im not suggesting that his vocals or indeed the arrangement are superior to any other version of the tune. It just works for me, the first time I heard it it just filled me with emotion and I knew that I had to have it, surely a sign of good soul music in my book. I have it now on the Village Soul compilation both CD and Vinyl issues and on Bruce's own California Soul LP, perhaps I should get a copy of GK's version too?. There is no doubt that the sisters wrote a great song, please thank them on my behalf. Midge

Thanks Lesli for providing the information with regard to Bruce Cloud. With her approval I feel that it is only right to provide a few comments with regard to Lesli by way of an introduction. I came into contact with Lesli purely by chance in December of last year and throughout that month we were in regular contact. Lesli is a musician herself and has played professionally alongside many of our favourite artists, as well as recording in her own right. Working very closely with Helen Lewis Mastor on the West Coast, Lesli herself has become an authority on the sisters recordings and writings and when their website is fully up and running promises to provide a full discography of their works. My eyes have been opened to the breadth of their work and Lesli was kind enough to join the forum in December to have a quick check and ensure that my thread regarding The Lewis Sisters was factually accurate. It’s great that persons with such an intimate knowledge of our musical heritage are so much more accessible to us all and willing to share their history with us. Welcome to the forum Lesli and please feel free to contribute whenever you have the time.

Thanks to all of you for your input on this thread, this is just what forums should be about. From Dawn who helped me track the album down and giving me background on Bruce's tragic story, (which makes his cover even more poignant in my opinion). And to s0ul45 and Lesli for their historic background and personal input. Id also like to include another friend of Chris here as well, DJ Terry Jones as it was he who I first heard play this on a radio show dedicated to the Norfolk Village sessions last year. Thanks All

While searching for one of my brother's recordings I ran across this site and it's heartwarming to know that so many people still appreciate his talent, but at the same time it's sad to read comments regarding his death. Maybe he killed his family then commited suicide and maybe not. Evidence had been tampered with and there were no identifiable fingerprints on the weapons OR the car where his body was found--did he wipe his fingerprints off everything? He had an extensive wardrobe, jewelry and a musicians box full of arrangements, all of these personal items were missing except his shoes (WALK IN MY SHOES). There's is much more to the story but it won't undo the past. We also had to buy clothes to bury him in and no he did not do drugs.

Joy Thank you so much for giving the other side of Bruce's story. In this day and age of the global information network it is often easy to overlook the fact that there are indeed two sides to each story, and that the information available to us on the www is not always accurate. I can assure you that no one here was being in anyway disrespectful but merely exchanging information and views in good faith. We are all Soul Music fans here first and foremost, many of us seek to enhance our enjoyment of the music by learning more about the artists and record labels which gave the music to us, as was the case with this thread. Best Wishes to you and thanks again for your input.

:)Can only echo Midges sentiments, so much of this information is only available to us now and it never ceases to amaze me how a simple question can tangent off into ways we never expected like this thread and the Holly St James as examples. Great thread exactly what the forum is for and I will definitely be searching out this track. Thanks Joy and Ussoul for your insight.

I would like to take this opportunity to share some personal information involving the the wife of Bruce Cloud. The wife of Bruce Cloud was previously married and had two sons. I know this because I am one of the sons. I know that Joy Cloud grieves over the loss of her brother and her brothers son Christopher as I grieve over the loss of my mother Margaret.

Here's an unfortunately low-resolution copy of a great article about Bruce Cloud from 1966, concerning his gig at a Norwalk nightclub. Thought you might all appreciate seeing it! (Click on it to enlarge)
