New Year, new places to go! Anyone confirm that Vault of Soul has moved back to Sheffield city centre @ Qube or is it just a one off on 12th Jan? Hoping to make the deep dark desert known as Mexbro on 19th

"Modernism" @ Lord Conyers Wales Village S26 Went to my first "modern soul" venue last night (26th), here goes..... Small venue small floor small attendance but those there enjoyed themselves. People came from afar - Grimsby Wakefield Doncaster. New two or three lads there but felt "out of it" a wee bit - thanx Julia & Martyn for looking after me/putting up with me ;D Didn't know half the sounds played ;D but they were fine. Got short shrift for asking for my fave Patti Austin track as "its too old for us Ash" hmmmmm so thats what Modernism is about? I did get my Brian Holland track played though AND had copious amounts of amber liquid so a decent night - oh and I got a lift home so thanx Phil m8! Overall opinion was OK could have been better supported by "local" folk but hey thats showbusiness. Yes I would go again - there I've said it now - reckon my missus would enjoy more than me though cos she's more "varied" than this old geezer Once again cheers Julia n Martyn Their next "Modernism" is 23rd Feb so no doubt they'll be across to "Soul Galore" to flyer - hope so cos they deserve support - as do ALL local events

Martin Dixon also gave me a "modern" cd which was good of him. No bludy track listing tho - creek n paddle? E mailed him got list - actually knew 5 of the 15 artistes - tuther 10 dint have a clue, still the missus is happy. I'm getting earache now on the lines of "Can I go next time" "Will you play some of these" ;D

It was shut and so we ended up trawling down Ecclesall Road, with me apologising every 5 minutes and buying more than my fair share of the drinks I am still paying the loan off now

Soul Galore 16th Feb poor turnout (again) only had 50 in but think the small crowd enjoyed some quality sounds. Had a projector on showing live NS acts and soul films and was a fundraiser for Mick Wilde - thats why I'm disappointed but hey thats show business Think about half a dozen went on to Sam's afterwards. Here's some of the choons we aired on the night:- Al Wilson - La La Peace Song Lenny Williams - Fool Benny Troy - Tomorrow Spinners - I Cross MY Heart M Gaye - I'll Be Doggone D Ross - More Today Than Yesterday B Womack - Home Is Where Lou Rawls - CU When U Get There Ty Berkely - Man Of Value 4 Tops - I'm Grateful Major Lance - The Beat T Clarke - Landslide Isleys - Your Love/Painted Smile/Got 2 Have U Back B Randolph - Another Day S Ward - Give It Up W Pickett - Mr Magic Man B Holland - I'm So Glad T Edwards - Can't Get Enough Supremes - He's All I Got T Yuro - It'll Never Be Over Dells - Your Song G Latter - Dotted Line F Bass - I Can't Rest Originals - Suspicion B Holloway - Reconsider Funk Bros - Love Is Like An Itching Lee Andrews - Nevertheless Fi dells - Try A Little Harder Paula Durante - You're Not My Kind Kim Weston - U Can Do It Edwin Starr - Back Street Harold Melvin - Get Out Sapphires - Gotta Have Your Love J Ruffin _ I Gotta Let U Go YH Unltd - California Montage and others that I have overlooked like SJ Quails & P Sledge Oh yeah and BTW visited Mick Wilde in hospiotal, he's doing Ok to say what a body blow he's suffered - recognised me, speech n memory ok but no use of left side upper n lower. Took him 2 soul books, 2 CDs and a flyer ;D He'd just come off the exercise bike when I visited, we had a reminisce and laughed n cried for an hour. Thanx for support - we'll try again 5th April shall we? Hopefully Mick will be home by then and I'll have him on front seats central to floor. Told him no fighting tho We back on radio 2nd March - 87.7fm or redroadmusic.com sundays 6-8pm

Showroom, Sheffield 23rd Feb DJ'd by 2 old m8s from Donny area, Joe "Okeh" Lakin & Al Taylor, FREE admission. Didn't go til 9ish, as usual struggled 4 parking in "Dig a road up city", into the chill out bar/reception, nice ambience(whatever ) poor choice of lager tho, but then background music catches my ears, sounds good, concentrate lad concentrate. Checks out DJ who happen to be a young couple(25 maybe) playing stuff for a cross section of young 'uns. Racks brain(not hard I know) decides on King Curtis instrumental - ha ha they don't know so I go back to bar. Just b4 we leave to go into soul bar said young lady whispers in my ear "It's The Kingpins" now weren't they KC backing group? Am not sure but it sounded "groovy" to me. The main event - couldn't find the door at first BUT, you remember as a cool teen when you went in a club and the 1st record being played really grabbed you? And I mean really grabbed you when you 1st walk in? You know right there and then that its gonna be a cracking night - well it happened here. "More Love" by Gospel Classics, a personal fave of mine soul heaven right here right now ;D The aforementioned DJs plus Speedy played 100% oldies including a few Ska/Bluebeat sounds and it was brill to hear them again. My old mucka from Rotherham, Dave, was there and he must be on a new diet healthy living thing cos he was perspiring, nay sweating buckets - it was just one of them nights. Brill music, brill crowd, brill demo labels on the decks too! Definately recommend this venue to any1 wanting a totally oldies night. Its not a big venue, dancefloor central to bar and console but if they weren't dancing they were singing in their seats - gr8 night think the next one is end Apr. Oh yeah and the bonus was watching the kids queueing up for the Students' Union Bar opposite - fab outfits. ;D "Haven't you heard about the guy who's known as The Cheater? Da da da dat dar He's gonna break your little heart and he'll mistreat ya" Lovely stuff Bob Kuman & The In Men (stateside then reissue Bell) Try it you might like it! I'll post next date when known
