Went to see my m8 Gaz Mounsey @ Corner Pocket, Mexbrough on Saturday night. Lousy ride, lift very late and weather awful. Didn't get there until half ten Inside about 90 in attendance with mixed crowd and bonus for me seeing two "old lads" from our Charade daze - Tony & Mel, lots of reminiscing/woffle/patter etc etc well it was '72 the last time I went ;D Corner Pocket been seriously renovated since I was last there and looks better for it, dance floor smaller but general facilities much better. Enjoyed my free CD but dipped out on the Easter Egg raffle - hey don't laff they were bloody massive eggs Music was across the board but the biggest success on the floor was the old motown sounds from after midnight. All in all a decent night, just a pity I can't make more cos we tend to clash with dates and management not flexible enough to change them - good job myself & Gaz talk

rOTHERHAM tRANSPORT cLUB WAS ok - think it was their 10th anniversary. About 100 in I reckon. Sound system way too loud for early spots, the young lassie DJ toned it down and then spoilt her set by playing 2 versions of Baby I Need Your Loving. Despite that and my painkillers it was ok. SHOWROOM SHEFFIELD was better concentrating on mainly 6Ts soul with later on just a few from 70-72. Met up with some of the KGB/Bar Abbey crowd and a lot of "good old boys" from back in "our day" 68/69. Al Taylor spinning the sounds and a gr8 set as usual. Mega interest shown in my flyers so we'll wait and see for 17th May to see if any turn up - "playing oldies for oldies and that's no crime" ;D

Roving Reporter back again! So where do me wife daughter & sis-in-law go 7th June? Brighton Beach at Carling Academy Sheffield. £6 OTD no dress code runs from 11pm to 3am. Started off poorly long queue didn't get in until about 20 past! Place was pretty rammed and by that I mean over 1k attended. Venue has 2 rooms, massive downastairs with mix of 60s pop, soul, latin and much smaller room upstairs playing northern,r n b, pysch n garage - all sounds good however...................... A simple rule of no drinks on the dancefloor wudda made it half decent. Kids dancing with plastic pots outta their heads falling down didn't make for a good night I only knew 4 records all night (G Fame, B Everett, J Nash & B Acklin) never heard either DJ say owt all night. Sound system way too loud etc etc etc - even my daughter was peeded off Highlight? Being grilled by 2 very intelligent students during my many fag breaks regards life in 60s n 70s - not that I remember much of it ;D Would I go again? Narrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr which is a shame cos I wanted to hear new stuff and find out who it was etc etc. Never mind I'll stick to babysitting in near future

Hey up Ash I assume you won't be letting us have any report about last nights fruitless trip. Why was it cancelled? Good news about the venue though for Soul Galore ;D

So there I am, like a kid in a toy shop, gotta new car haven't driven since accident nearly 6 years ago etc etc etc ;D Where to? Local says the wife, pick our Carol up & Keith, so grinning like a cheshire cat in the new car I do as I'm told. We're off to Silverwood MW Rotherham OK? IT'S CANCELLED mAY AS WELL HAVE A QUICK DRINK (WELL ORANGE 4 ME) THEN PEED OURSELVES AT THE KAREOKE CONTESTANTS, HAD A CHAT TO THE STEWARD OF CLUB WHO TELLS ME "THE LADS HAD A FALLOUT AMONGST THEMSELVES, THEY EVEN CANCELLED REST OF THE YEARS DATES" "More fool you says I! They booked you should have had a deposit" "You from round here mate?" so at that point we calmly left the building Now we all go on about soul in decline, smoking ban, people not travelling, too many(far too many IMHO) venues clashing etc etc etc So with all the power of information technology why didn't we know about it? I try and get to as many local nights as I can whether its Roth Sheff Retford wherever and then this - well its no wonder us promoters have a bad name innit? Now where's that stroppy club steward? ;D No doubt their "other venue" in Roth is cheaper/free or they realised it was far 2 ambitious running 2 different nights a week after each other within 4 mile radius. Another point, I go quite regularly to their monthly functions, they come to mine once a year at the Xmas Anniversary night - ok rant over (mutter mutter mutter) PS: And dont no clever richard tell me it was advertised as cancelled - I don't buy a paper to find out about soul nights

Weekend of 18th/19th July approaches and spoilt for choice cos there are far toooooooooo many soul nights to chose from so made the easy decision and stayed in feet up dvd on Saturday decided to pop along to Victory Club in Darnall and............... very pleasant suprised. Venue is small/intimate with wooden floor and decent sound system. Met on the door by Rog N Charlie and treated like royalty I kid you not. Very friendly crowd even the aggrivated smokers were sociable (and I'm one) ;D John DJing gave us a welcome over the mike and even played Robert John so we well happy Overall a very good night - nice crowds nice sounds and I'll be back in the future - cheers Victory Club

First time for me at Dinnington, the numbers were down but this seems to be the norm of late, but the music quality was good and well appiciated by the people in attendance. My only criticism was that the venue was too bright but that’s just me I like a bit of a darker atmosphere saying that this did not spoil my enjoyment of the night and I will be back. To ash and the lad’s thanks for a great night I’m looking forward to guesting and bringing a bit of Retford Soul to ya in November. pete

Sat 16th needed to go out cos spent all day at care home where my old mum is seriously ill - mobile on full charge and thank God it didn't ring So, Victory Club @ Darnall Sheffield again, took the wife and her sister. Pleasant suprise when I got there cos there were another 4 Soul Galore regulars there - wey hey ;D Had a decent night despite the weird experience of trying not to laff at one poser dancing whilst facing the mirrored wall all night - A Lot O Love came to mind but reckon I would have peed myself if the DJ had played it out ;D As usual though all 4 DJs played good sets but particularly enjoyed Barry from KGB and Charlie who had the closing set - cheers lads much appreciated and big shout to an old m8 Roger - he knows why! Oooh the intrigue ;D Its a nice little venue with a nice little crowd which affords my taste in music - ta very much lads

Bank Holiday weekend split between visiting my poorly Mum and finalising Thurcroft gig - both were painful for different reasons Sunday evening went along to KGB All Dayer @ Bar Abbey Sheffield. Not a gr8 turnout but some good stuff played out and as explained to me it was for present punters so a little commercial but the dancers enjoyed it. Venue a bit small with a well worn wooden floor but gr8 paintjob on the walls, lighting from the bar a tad strong but the 40+ present didn't let it put them off - think crowd was mixture of homeys and Victory Club PS: By homeys I mean regular KGB attenders Thanx Barry see you Friday at Transport?

Transport Club Rotherham Friday 29th Went for an hour or so to take my mind off things Hard to guess numbers but enough for good atmosphere and still able to get a space on dancefloor - not that I did what with my dodgy knees Was alright - good support from Sheffield too The Indian was ok afterwards as well, just a shame I was duty driver ;D

My first promotion @ Thurcroft S66 went well. Despite awful weather we had 50 there and people travelled from Grimsby & Retford & Worksop so those who didn't bother - you dipped out on a good night. Quality sounds played out by Keith & Barry(KGB) and a fundraising event for Action Medical Research. Dunno how much they collected Ian &Ann Turner have details and I will notify when known. My guest DJ Barry Holland gave me a lovely suprise by bringing 2 old mates along - Lou Christie & Sunny&Sunliners, records which I sold during the miners strike of 84 - gobsmacked, they still had my monika on the label #74 & #429 respectively - nice touch Barry cheers Highlight of the night, kind words by majority who attended, venue is spot on! and farewell by Keith DJ who waxed lyrical thanking people and introduced J Radcliffe popped the needle down and hey presto Archie Bell bounds outta the speakers chuckling chappy ;D At the "after show party" Keith & I were packing the kit away on stage and did an impromptu "moon" which wasn't noticed for about a minute but then all hell broke loose ending with Pam from Worksop giving us all a flash of her bristol citys Roll on 4th October thats all I can say......................cheers all who came along.
