Hi all... I'm looking to putting together a personal selection of Motown dance sounds with the help (hopefully) from Nick. I would be interested in your choices/favourites from the past? cheers! KTF

And the results from the Sheffield jury are:-
1/ Anything by the master, Marvin Gaye 2/ I'll always love you - The Spinners 3/ Just a little misunderstanding - Contours (or depending on the mood Supremes) 4/ I ain't going nowhere - Jnr Walker 5/ Helpless - Kim Weston 6/ Guess I'll always love you - Isley Bros 7/ Heatwave - Martha and the Vandellas 8/ You're gonna love my baby - Barbara McNair 9/ 6 by 6 Earl van Dyke (first Northern!!! record I purchased) 10/ He's all I got - Supremes.
I'm sure most will disagree and there are many soonds just as good but I just love these and they all have memories.
All the best Steve

Hmm a real tough one this as unlike Northern nearly every Motown track is Class and the stars in a league of their own. I have chose to take the easy way out and nominate just one record. For me this track has to be the most danced to Motown track ever and long before i had heard of Northern it prob got me into the style of music. It has been played everywhere from funerals to more than likely Barmitzfas and has appealed to every generation since its release. You know the one. It,s the one that at your office xmas party the typist who looks like a cross between Goliath,s big sister and a daughter of the third Reich grabs you to dance to with nothing but pure dark intention in her eyes. You know the one. It,s the one that your great aunt Mabel who smells of Lavender and Rich tea biscuits forces you to dance with her to at the fammily get togethers. You know the one. It,s the one like great uncle Frank who is in the Asylum, everyone knows its there but nobody will own up to it.You know the one. Every pub in the country that ever had Motown on it,s jukebox will deffo have had it there. It has been danced to at nearly every disco etc by Rugby players on a stag night right down to the Soul connoseuirs(spelt wrong i know!).You know the one. Unlike all the other greats that have gome over the years and their have been many this group only had one true hit that spanned everywalk of life and to this day still remains a classic. If i had just one chance to speak to the group i would merely say this... "I want to thank you for the joy you,ve brought me,thank you for the things you,ve taught me,heaven must have sent you......." If the Elgins are not in the official Motown hall of Fame then it,s a damn shame. Heaven in your arms....The most danced to motown record in the World ever (probably) Heineken 2006. Cap

Lovin it Captain but myself prefering the "Its so hard lovin you, but I don't wanna, wanna let you go, No Little Darlin" These two tracks are from the same stable and are like wine and cheese and go together so perfectly.

I make the captain absolutely spot on. The Elgins Heaven Must Have Sent You sounded as great when I bought it for 6s& in 1966 as it still does today. Just look back over your old Blues & Soul's and see the number of soulies that told Dave Godin that this was their favourite soul recording of all time. It is a majestic piece of music that has continued to excite us all for more than 30 years. So beyond this masterpiece, what else should be considered. Here's a few:- Baby I Need Your Loving The Four Tops Crying In The Night The Monitors My Love Is Your Love The Isley Brothers It's So Hard Being A Loser The Contours I Like Everything About You The Four Tops Castles In The Sand Little Stevie Wonder

Carlsberg don't do music, but if they did, it would probably be Northern Soul

My first post too: Suspicion by the Originals Baby Hit and Run - Contours He's all I've got - Supremes Little darlin' - Marvin There's no stopping us now - Supremes The Elgins of course! What does it take - Junior Walker - not the best beat for dancing, but what a great sound! I've got a feeling - Barbara Randolph Six by Six - memories of the youth club! Festival Time - San Remo Strings - yes I know it was on Ric-Tic, but Motown bought the rights.
