Yes, the Contours "First I look at the purse" is a wonderful piece of power Motown that was a sensation back in the sixties and yet I have never heard it played on recent Soul nights. If I were to base my number one favourite of all time on how I felt about a song the first few times I heard it (probably the only true way to make this kind of judgement) Then 'Purse would be number one.

Welcome to the forum darkhorse01252 and with taste such as that long may you remain with us. The Edwin Starr track has always been one of my favourites and I'm sure I must have plugged it elsewhere on the site. On that radio 2 excuse for a Motown show hosted by Lulu (ugh!!) on Bank Holiday Monday she of course played the other side 'Way Over There' which basically goes nowhere!
A shame not more people recognised the quality of the Martha Reeves track years ago. Whenever I saw it in the 70's it was just a few pence so I kept buying it to give away. So few people were interested.
The Barbara McNair album track is another wonderful slab of Motown.
Here's a few others that deserve consideration.
I'll Fight ('Til I Win Your Love) Chuck Jackson Don't Tear Down What Took So Long To Build G.C. Cameron I'm Someone Who Cares The Originals Just Before Love Ends Jimmy Ruffin We're Almost There Michael Jackson (honest) Don't Be Afraid Bobby Taylor

** Learning to trust my man has got to be one of the most underated tunes ever, soulful, great beat, awesome vocals, you try holding that note towards the end, wonderful tune..

First post folks, also where I fist heard them, (for those of you on here who remember the lads from Luton and Leighton Buzzard who used to do the Catacombs/Torch/Mecca/Bradford, Bradford? - etc a big hi) but anywayI would go for I gotta feeling - Barbara Randolph (Bletsoe/EarlsBarton) Just a rumour - Isley Bros (Birds Nest West hampstead) Double 0 Soul - Instrumental (I know, it's RicTic, Heartbeat York) Lonley girl am I - Velvellettes(personal collection) Love is like an itching - Supremes (Market Harborough) Keep on loving me - Frances Nero (personal collection) Shake me, wake me - various covers but my choice Four Tops 6*6 - Earl Van Dyke(Market Harborough) The Doctor - Mary Wells (on Stateside/personal collection) All for you - Earl Van Dyke

Nice selection dandare, welcome to the forum. Certainly some classics here but what caught my attention was actually the non Motown track in your list, 'The Doctor' by Mary Wells. It's not it's eligibility that matters it's the fact that this is such an underrated recording. I'll be honest I did not buy it upon it's release on Stateside in the U.K. and was only alerted to it via a tribute to Mary written by Dave Godin in B & S. He regarded it as his personal favourite of all her recordings and I'd never heard it. You note that it is from your personal collection and that probably sums it up, it isn't the kind of record that's easy to play out, hence, it isn't heard a great deal. Anyway great choice. By the way, have you ever considered spell check?

Same topic, slightly different twist. Motown covers. Get Ready Donnie Elbert This Old Heart Of Mine Donnie Elbert I Can't Help Myself Donnie Elbert Love Is Here And Now You're Gone Donnie Elbert Ooh Baby Baby Donnie Elbert Where Did Our Love Go Donnie Elbert All issued in the U.K. as singles CBS/Epic, Polydor/Mojo, Avco, and London. Certainly no better than the originals although Get Ready is really good and Where Did Our Love Go was novel at the time.
