Welcome to the site midge, and I'm sure that your reminiscencies are shared by many others on here. You're right about The Isleys version of 'I Hear A Symphony'. Ronnie's voice is always frightening but the passion and sincerity of his delivery here just blow Diana away. Oh, by the way, Lincolnshire is not a bad place to live and as a soulie you'll be made very, very welcome!!

Some good memories stirred reading through members lists of Motown Favourites. I like a lot of people here got my first taste of soul largely thanks to Mr Gordy and Co. Local Youth Clubs sometime in 1969, my earliest memory of a favourite motown tune would have to be "I gotta Feeling" which many have already mentioned, along with others like "Little Darling", "3rd Finger Left Hand" (which I always preferred over its A side). "When you're young and in Love" has fond memories of being exactly that;o) But for me the stand out for me back then just has to to be the Isley Brothers version of the absolutely brilliant "I Hear a Symphony", gives me goosebumps just typing the title, PURE class then, and NOW. Of course Ive heard many tunes since that have had the same effect but this was back in the day before we had heard the term Northern Soul, and certainly before I had been to "proper" clubs. And to think that there are soul fans who dont regard Motown as "proper" soul? I'd like to Thank the Youth Club DJ's who played Motown (and other soul tunes) in their sets and gave me the bug all those years ago, I was in remission for a good few years as life got in the way, but I wasnt at all unhappy when I had a serious relapse a few years ago. Midge hi midge ,on the subject of "tingle tunes" the isleys i gotta have you back, suprmes theres no stopping us now,and edwin starrs my weakness always got me when hearing them at the local do,late 60s.

Thanks for all the comments on "I hear a Symphony" whichever version you prefer is obviously down to personal taste, and I must admit I havent heard the Stevie Wonder effort, but it's obvious from the short time I have been lurking around this site that there is a hell of a lot of stuff I havent heard. As I mentioned I was away from the "Northern" scene for years due to being in the Army, and therefore out of the country a lot, but I still used to go to soul oriented clubs whenever I could, though they where more what you would call Jazz-Funk venues, they played top music though and it was all SOUL to me at the end of the day. Though I left the Army in 95 my Mrs is still in so we move around a hell of a lot and I have never been in one place long enough to become a regular on any local scene, which is why I am so looking forward to making the move up to Lincoln next year and finally (Hopefully) settling down in one place and getting to know some like minded people, nothing worse than going to a do on your own as I found out recently at a Cleethorpes All-dayer. But I digress must get back to thinking over some more Motown favourites. Midge

These lists are almost impossible. The list i choose now would probably be different if i made another tomorrow. But i'll give it a go. In no particular order of preferance. The Monitors - Crying in the night Marvin Gaye - Love starved heart Gladys Knight - Just walk in my shoes Contours - baby hit and run The Originals - Goodnight Irene Some might find my last choice a little strange but what a beat. As i said earlier, if i posted another list tomorrow, i would more than likely pick five completely different tracks. But thats the beauty of this music we love. So much to choose from.
