I could not make my mind up either so I used my vote for Cleethorpes.
I remember walking up to the pier and feeling the vibration 50/100yds away as soon as you stepped on the boards.
Also that walk along the seafront in the night from the Pier to Winter Gardens and back again. sweating like crazy and then being cut to ribbons by the sea breeze. The chip butties and lollies were an almost compulsory part of the night.
Many a time I went on my scooter and picked up Kev Thomas in Louth one winter in the snow and he had a short sleeved Ben Sherman on, they don't make guys like that now do they ? Got the scooter pinched one night and took 2 days to find it minus a few bits, that took the shine off taking it again.
I was picked up most weeks by Mary & Colin Chapman who I owe a huge debt to for the free lifts, I think many of us owe them big time for their contribution to the music on the east coast.

Hmm a tough list indeed although we and Colly and the rest of the Selby Mafia had visited most places" the Winter gardens" pipped it for me..Sure you can,t deny the overwhelming smell of Brut and the dampness of the Casino but those early all-dayers when "Sam" ruled the world and we all tucked into chicken and chips wether we had taken gear or not.And purely because out of all the venues that have been and gone the Winter gardens still is the original venue that has kept going. Finally out of all the great people who we have trajically lost over the years i don,t think many would argue about how much of a character the mighty Bub was and what he brought to Cleethorpes. In the days of heavy polititics what should be played and what shouldn,t to be soulfull him like Dave evison just got on with the job and entertained the masses out of love of the job rather than the prestige of doing it..Here,s to Cleggy may it run for ever and the people who live there be true to their roots.

No contest!!! Samanthas every time, with Cleethorpes a close second. Why? Because these two venues offered the broad spectrum of NS without the politics, but with enthusiasm and dedication. Why Samanthas over Cleethopes? Sad but true... it was nearer!

Notts Palais shouldn't be on that list...would have gone to Colemans or the Brit if they were open at the same time ;D

Sorry guys, have to say the palais.... hard decision as my local stomping ground was cleethorpes. But the all dayers at the palais has it for me. St Marks train station on a Sunday, taking over a couple of the carriages, someones cassette player on max... brilliant. Rob (mr golden voice) smith doing excellant spots.

Wigan is the only venue on the list which I went to (1978-1981) so it has to get my vote. The standard of records on a Saturday was in hindisght somewhat dire, but, when you're 15, Teddy Vann, James Coit and The Burning Bush soon have you on the floor. The situation improved when I started going to the oldies nights, which were to die for. Saturdays later improved with the arrival of Soul Sam and Pat Brady in 1979 (or was it 1980). It was a shame that the managment had to bleed the last drop of blood out of the punters with the numerous 'last' nights. I was there on 18.9.81, but the place was just too full. I also went to the last 'oldies' night in Oct but by then the rot had set in and I came out early and slept in my car. Currently, the King's Hall at Stoke is my favourite.

Wigan eclipsed it for me.
Met my wife of 27 years there and even though Samanthas was my stomping ground, still felt that the sweat and grime of the Casino (excluding the Beachcomber which was a sh*te hole) had the ambience. Despite also getting nicked for pinching some mushrooms (not the magic variety) from the Woolworths night delivery and having to go to court in Wigan ~ still loved it. Learnt my lesson since.
Spent most of my time upstairs in Mr M's with my cassette recorder in front of speakers at right hand of stage ~ then listened to it on way home next day.
Remember the screws that stuck out of the floor in M's? Knackered my brogues!!

I voted for Cleethorpes .. it has probably the best memories for me, walking across the Humber Bridge on a calm summer's night and getting the last train from Barton.
Joint top with Clifton Hall in Rotherham.

I agree Dave ~ Clifton Hall was a good venue but bar was garbage ~ took yonks to get a drink.
KGB in Sheffield was a terrific venue and yes folks ~ it's still going!! Called Bar Abbey now but still a cracking 8 - 1 am evening when it's on.

Had to vote for Wigan as it was the one I had visited most often but was most impressed musically by the sets Colin Curtis played at the Mecca & the Palais and still have an old tape of a West Midland Soul Club All-Dayer at the Palais on 02/03/1975.
I was also a regular at Tiffany's, Halesowen on Thursday nights, thrashing my trusty Reliant Robin up the M5 for an evening of Keith Minshull's best sounds.

cleethorpes holds a very nostalgic place in my heart, both pier and wintergardens, the cleethorpes lot seemed far more open minded, chilled and mature than some (not all) of the wigan crew, but, i'm havin' to go with st.ives on this one, great mix of music, great venue, great punters. quite liked oddfellows in leicester in early eighties, did you forget that one nick?
